CHICAGO - On Oct. 21, two pieces of luggage vanished from an Atlantic Southeast Airlines plane after a cargo door apparently opened in flight, the New York Times reported.Shortly after the plane took off from Chicago's Midway Airport, its controls indicated an air pressure problem. The plane circled back and landed. None of the 70 passengers were injured, but the ground crew found a cargo door open. Two pieces of luggage were gone.Although other items like blue ice and plane parts have fallen in flight, Joe Brancatelli, who edits a Web site for business travelers, told the Times he had never heard of luggage falling. The Federal Aviation Administration said it was investigating the case.A breakthrough occurred the next day when a railroad employee found a garment bag on the ground in a yard less than a mile from the airport. Kate Modolo, a spokeswoman for Atlantic Southeast, which operated the Delta flight to Atlanta, said the airline was thankful that "no one has been hurt during this very rare incident." The bag was on its way to its owner, she added, declining to describe its contents or condition. The second bag remained missing.
